Experiences of childhood affects many facets of our adult life. Recently I was thinking about my political beliefs of limited government and my dislike for government expansion with entitlement programs.

I grew up in a middle class neighborhood. My parents did not have a lot of money, they never gave me a lot of money, but growing up, I never did without the basics. Sure, I would have liked to have been given additional spending money to purchase more clothes, Beatles albums, ballgame tickets, swimming club memberships, junk food, you get the picture.

My parents and grandparents grew a lot of our food in vegetable gardens. We ate them fresh from the garden in the summer, and out of jars and freezer bags in the winter. My grandparents kept the neighborhood supplied with plenty of fresh vegetables. If there was a need that my family was aware of, they tried to take care of it. My parents and grandparents have given money, taken food in, and helped anyway they could where there was a need.

Except for an occasional “to go” order at Krystal Hamburger, and later KFC, I never remember a single time our family went into a restaurant to eat a meal. It was considered too expensive and we ate home cooked meals instead. The first time I actually remember eating at a restaurant was after church on Sunday night at Shoney’s, I was probably 14 years old. I ordered their onion rings and I still recall they cost $.50. It seemed very expensive to me because that’s all the money I had that night. (they were delicious)

A few members of our extended family received government food either free or at reduced costs. We didn’t have food stamps then but they were referred to as “commodities.” My immediate family never turned to the government for assistance.

Instead, my mother took on babysitting jobs for the neighbor down the street (she also held other part-time jobs from time to time) and my father worked 2 jobs. Instead of working normal hours (8 am till 5 pm) he worked the 4-11 shift at Ford Glass plant (because it paid a little more money), got up the next morning and painted houses until time to head back to the plant. Didn’t need government assistance.

I was taught to value savings and hard work. My grandparents took me to Home Federal Savings and Loan bank to start an account when I was too short to stand at the counter without a step stool. I never saw a credit card until I went to college. I wasn’t even sure how they worked. I never had a credit card until after I graduated. If my parents couldn’t pay for it by the end of the month, they didn’t buy it. It’s that simple. Get it? No credit debt.

My grandmother knew the head cook at the local “burger” shop and got me a job washing dishes when I was actually under age, I was 15. During that time period I caddied on weekends at the Old Hickory Golf Club. I walked from my grandparent’s house to the golf course on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 5 am to get in line with the other guys looking for work. I’d walk home late that evening with about $20 in my pocket. Felt like a millionaire. Didn’t need government assistance.

I won’t bore you with the details, but subsequent years were similar. I had a job during most of my high school years, and I worked during College. My parents and grandparents paid for my college tuition. There was no government assistance.

So this is a small snapshot into my early years that shaped how I view the world today. The idea of turning to the government for anything is completely foreign to me. The idea of depending on the government for financial assistance is completely foreign to my way of thinking. If you need something, then work for it. If you can’t obtain it that way, then pray for it and God will provide it. I often think, if I can do this, if my mother and father could do it, then others can do it as well.

I recognize a role for limited government to help provide social assistance. But government is currently too big, too inefficient, mismanaged, abused and out of control.

If my government can keep the roads paved (which they often don’t) and our country safe from attack, maintain a strong infrastructure, keep our water, food, and pharmaceuticals safe, then I’ll be content for now.

Yes I am thankful when the government looks after me. I know sometimes I can be negative about government intrusion, but I’m going to turn over a new leaf starting today.

News cameras spotted our distinguished Mayor of Philadelphia (Nutter Dem.) as he proudly walked the hallowed littered streets of Philly feeling good about the newly passed law requiring restaurants and food establishments to post calories of food for all to see. It warms my soul as well because I’ve always wondered how many calories a Starbucks Vente Caramel Machiato with double cream contained. And thankfully I can also see right away the calories in a Boston Cream Filled Dunkin Doughnut. No more for me!! That did it!

This along with the new tax proposal to add 25 cents to the cost of colas for inner city kids is something we can all feel good about. This is heart warming. Just think of those kids now refusing to pay an extra quarter for Coca Cola and turning instead to the OJ section of Florida’s fresh squeeze. And besides we all know that increasing taxes improves diet and health as well as creates jobs. Right? Right. Behavior modification is just another thing our government has excelled in.

The tax on vendors using plastic bags for groceries will help to eliminate trash on the streets too.

Mayor Blumberg of NYC can also boast about mandating restaurants to stop cooking with saturated fats and too much salt.

This is what I want my government doing for me. Who needs better roads or decrease in crime when we can have them looking out for our dietary needs. So today I am thankful for all that my government does for me and my family!!

This past week was a tough one for conservative Americans as we witnessed the largest government takeover and expansion since FDR and social security. Congressional representatives from both sides of the isle complained of being victims of hate “crimes,” vandalism, ugly and nasty comments. Some liberals have accused the right of being racists, bullies, uncaring and hate mongers. Some on the right have have indulged in name calling (“it’s a baby killer”), “communists,” and so on. There is a lot of anger in our country today. We see this on the news programs, hear it on talk radio, and read it on Facebook of all places. We’ve all heard it before that it’s taboo and an Emily Post no-no to discuss religion and politics in social situations. Of course that was long before social networking like Facebook.

I’ve been asked “where is this anger coming from?” So I’m trying to think through this question. Why are people angry at our politicians? Why are we angry with each other? Is there in fact increased anger today or is it more in plain sight because of increased visibility created by the blogosphere, the internet, success of talk radio, and of course FB?

I am very concerned anytime government expands and creates a larger dependent population. I don’t ”hate” anyone but I do hate high taxes. It robs me of my hard earned money and ultimately the more taxes I pay, the less I have to spend on manufactured goods, home improvements, travel, entertainment, and savings. Increased taxes results in less job creation. And where do the taxes go? I posted a comment earlier this week asking if anyone could name a single entitlement managed by the government, funded by tax payers that was doing a good job. There is none. Why would anyone believe this entitlement is any different? I’m angry because this is not the hope and change promised. Obama never crossed the isle as a senator (for a full 18 months) and he has shown so far the same partisan politics. We were promised by Obama that “all this will be seen on C Span,” which was a lie. This bill was passed with sleaze, deals, and largely behind closed doors. Is this the political transparency Obama promised? Have you heard Obama speak lately? Can any objective listener say that he doesn’t sound divisive and angry?

I’m angry that people apparently don’t understand what debt is and at citizens who have little concept of “pay as you go.” It’s a simple concept, balance your checkbook. Someone has to pay for government services but we hear little about how things will be paid for.

The liberals I’ve spoken with are still mad at Bush/Cheney. They refuse to place any blame for problems of the past year on Obama or the Democratic leadership (Reid and Pelosi) who, by the way have been in power for several years now.

Yes there is anger. Political and Religious beliefs go deep into the heart and soul of people. Individuals dig into their beliefs and refuse to listen and learn from each other. When this happens, pride slips in and prevents us from seeing the “big picture.” In this case, I believe the “big picture” is the growth, protection, and success of The United States of America, the greatest nation on earth.

First of all let me apologize to my “thousands” of loyal followers (ok , both of you) for being gone so long. But I’m back and now ready to leave again. So much going on in Obamaland I don’t know where to begin. As an overall observation, I’m thinking back at how the Community Organizer (AKA, BO) was going to bring peace, love, prosperity and cooperation to all. He was going to “change the tone” in Washington. He was going to bring Democrats and Republicans together. There was to be peace and harmony forever more. The hatred and racism of the past would be buried forever as we elected our first black President.

Oh well. So much for promises from a politician. In my short 49 years, (OK, 56 short years), I’ve never seen or heard of so much name calling, charges of incivility, racism, and division in our great land. Of course all of this was predicted by my friend and mentor Rush L. He said during the election that if BO was elected, racism and division would increase dramatically. Once again, he was right. Why is it that when the Republicans or conservatives disagree with Team Obama they are labeled as racist, Nazi’s, and protests at town-hall meetings as originating from “astro turf;” not “grass roots”.

I have some first hand knowledge of a friend who recently joined in the Tea Party protest held on the mall in Washington. My thanks to Kate D. for taking the time to show her loyalties to our country and constitution. I’m planning on doing the same the next opportunity I have. I know her personally, and I know her kind. She’s not racist, not a bigot, not a kook, not part of any “astro turf” movement sponsored by an insurance company or hateful drug company. She’s not a Nazi. She is a concerned citizen that doesn’t want to see the government run everything from banks, to cars, to hospitals. She sees and hears, as I do the contradictions spewed from Team Obama 24/7. George Will described it this way:

He says America’s health-care system is going to wrack and ruin and requires root-and-branch reform—but that if you like your health care (as a large majority of Americans do), nothing will change for you. His slippery new formulation is that nothing in his plan will “require” anyone to change coverage. He used to say, “If you like your health-care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health-care plan, period.” He had to stop saying that because various disinterested analysts agree that his plan will give many employers incentives to stop providing coverage for employees.

He deplores “scare tactics” but says that unless he gets his way, people will die. He praises temperate discourse but says many of his opponents are liars. He says Medicare is an exemplary program that validates government’s prowess at running health systems. But he also says Medicare is unsustainable and going broke, and that he will pay for much of his reforms by eliminating the hundreds of billions of dollars of waste and fraud in this paragon of a program, and in Medicaid. He says Congress will cut Medicare (it will not) by $500 billion—without affecting benefits.

He says the nation’s economic health depends on controlling health-care costs. Yet so important is the trial bar in financing the Democratic Party, he says not a syllable in significant and specific support of tort reforms that could save hundreds of billions of dollars by reducing “defensive medicine” intended to protect not patients from illnesses but doctors from lawyers. He has said he will not add a dime to the deficit when bringing 47 million people into government-guaranteed health care. But Wednesday night, 17 million went missing: “There are now more than 30 million American citizens who cannot get coverage.” Almost 10 million of the uninsured are not citizens, and most of them are illegal immigrants. Presumably the other 7 million could get insurance but chose not to. Democrats propose fines to eliminate that choice. He suggests health-insurance companies are making excessive profits. But since 1996, profits of the six such companies in the S&P 500 have been below the 500′s average. He says a “public option”—a government insurance program—would not be subsidized to enable it to compete unfairly with private insurers. (The post office and the government’s transportation -”public option,” Amtrak, devour subsidies.) He says the public option is vital for keeping health insurers “honest”—but that it is only a wee “sliver” of reform. About that, Nancy Pelosi -disagrees.

The protests aren’t about one specific issue whether it be health care reform, taxes, banks, jobs. This isn’t about the color of some-one’s skin. Can we disagree and not be called a racist? It’s about keeping government small. It’s what our founding fathers had in mind.

Look, I’m a simple minded person so let me help simplify the hoop-la going on in Washington surrounding the proposals for government takeover of your health-care. First of all, it’s not “Obamacare” because BO has no bill. Although not as catchy, it’s more accurate to call it Pelosi-Reid care since BO has turned over the responsibility of writing this 1000 page bill of Frankenstein proportion to Nancy and Harry. All you have to remember is, regardless of which bill is passed (senate version or house version) , if it’s split apart, if it’s passed one step at a time, the ultimate goal of the current democrat leadership in the house and senate is to dismantle the finest health care system in the world currently available and establish a single payer system managed by government and payed for by you the taxpayers. Obama, Barney Frank, Pelosi and Reid have all stated in no uncertain terms they want a single payer plan. Forget about the so-called death panels, public option, illegal aliens, health rationing, and funding for abortion, for now. If they’re not in this first version that’s passed, it’s in the next step, or the next until there’s a single payer “postal like” health care system. In defending the claim that “you can keep the plan you currently have if you like it,” BO sought to provide evidence that competition (the government option) would not harm your current BC/BS plan by comparing the government plan to the postal service. He went on to say that Federal Express and UPS had performed much better than the post office and in fact grown their share of business. Duh.

What a gaffe. The post office is near bankruptcy because of poor management and service. I’ve been trying for over a year to have the post office correctly send me my mail instead of sending to my son’s (Richard Lee) address. We’ve written, called and even visited in person and just this week Lee had to bring me pieces of my mail he continues to incorrectly receive. Now that’s your government in action that wants to provide single service healthcare. If they can’t figure out how to deliver mail accurately and within budget, why on God’s green earth do we think they can take our appendicts out and leave the small intestine intact? That’s why we can’t afford to get caught up and distracted in all the political moral agruments about healthcare “reform.” Everyone wants to increase effeciencies and make sure that insurance companies don’t drop people who become ill. But, a crisis? No. Most people are covered and are satisfied with their current plan. Dismantle what is working? No. And don’t give me that WWJD (what would Jesus do for those of you non-church goers). Jesus wanted to take care of the poor and I believe he expects each of us to do our part in reaching out to help but he didn’t want Rome or Caesar to manage it by raising our taxes. For example, some of the best known, best managed hospital systems in the country are overseen and managed by the Catholics, Baptists, Seventh Day Adventists, Jewish Organizations, and the Methodists. Ever heard of “Baptist Hospital,” “St. Thomas Hospital,” or “Beth Israel.” Don’t be fooled, if the bill that is currently in the democrat controlled house or senate is passed by the current libs in Washington, it’s a step in the direction toward single payer coverage. Is that what we really want?

The current strategy of the Democratic Party leading the nation right now, is to disparage and discount those who have awakened to attend town halls and voice their concern about the massive expansion of government. We’ll see. Elections will take place in the near future and then we’ll know whether this anger and concern is ginned up by hateful insurance companies, wacky radio talk show hosts, and executed by robotic puppets (the American people), or rooted in a genuine desire to preserve our American freedoms and choice of health-care. Blue dog dems, watch out how you vote. States with middle of the road spineless elected representatives like Arlen Specter from PA, be prepared to look for another profession. I think this article is measured and fairly represents my thinking.

Although polls have consistently shown that just over half of Americans think the health-care system is in need of reform, a substantial majority say they are satisfied with their own insurance and care. Any hope of change will require their support, according to experts and advocates across the ideological spectrum

I think it may be finally sinking in that in order to cover the 47 million uninsured (including illegals) it’s not necessary to completely overhaul or reform what doesn’t need reforming. The fact is that most people in this country have access to competent and caring doctors. Obviously there are exceptions. Most citizens (253 million) are satisfied with their plan. Again, I’m sure there are exceptions. I had an interesting experience today at the pharmacy. Yes I have a drug plan with a 20 dollar co-pay. However, what I didn’t know is that the pharmacy I shop has a deal that certain classes of anti-biotics are free. I know that other pharmacies do the same to attract customers (free enterprise and capitalism at work). BO, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi or some other Washington bureaucrat didn’t have to mandate it or pass a law to require it. I also had to pick up another medicine (prednisone, and don’t worry it’s nothing serious). I took them up on their offer to fill it with a generic (God have mercy on my soul) and it cost me 4 dollars. So, 2 prescriptions, and a 4 dollar co-pay. Go figure. Go Reform?

I recently flew from Philadelphia to Rapid City S. Dakota. I don’t fly much anymore so it was a real eye opener for me. During my career with Wyeth, I’ve traveled quite extensively including trips to Asia, Europe, Korea, and many other countries during family vacations including India. I’ve flown first class, business class and of course the cattle class sitting in coach with my knees resting on my chin. I can honestly say the worst airlines in terms of customer service are those that are American owned and operated. The US airline’s offer poor service, lack of attention, rudeness, and incessant chattering of the flight attendants about their personal lives (which can easily be overheard) demonstrates a general lack on interest in making your flight comfortable. I know there are exceptions and I realize that US airlines have a good safety record. I’m sure there were heroes on the flight which landed in the Hudson River. But is it so difficult to offer cordial, polite, service as well? Poor service (lost bags, discontinuation of in-flight refreshments etc) has grown increasingly worse as the years have gone by. So have the profits and economics of the US owned airlines. See any connection?

If you ever have the privilege, take a Singapore Airlines flight. Even in coach class, as soon as you walk on the plane you are greeted by a well groomed, well dressed, and attractive flight attendant offering you fruit juice (or an adult beverage). Now think back to the last time you flew on a US airline. The flight attendants can barely pass the aisle. Most are over weight and grouchy. We’re herded in like sheep and goats. Singapore Air is one of the more profitable companies. See a connection?

It wouldn’t take a lot of money or effort to offer first rate service to paying customers. It might take some training and senior management who can see the connection between great customer service and customer loyalty.

Just returned from a sun filled, real western ranch vacation with real people no less. I had a chance to talk with real people who live in the so-called “fly-over” part of the country between the nutty west coast and the wacky east coast. These are the people that make the country work. They are self reliant and don’t depend on government to make things work for them. No whiners here in Wyoming. They provide the food that we city slickers put on the table. And oh yes, they cut down trees so that we can build our fancy homes and houses.

Kathy’s cousin has a ranch near the Black Hills of S. Dakota just across the state line in Wyoming. Sprawling prairies, tall Ponderosa Pines reaching upward from rocky soil, black hills, mountain goats, antelope, deer, wild turkeys and elk. All this is about 50 miles from Mt. Rushmore and Devil’s Tower. We rode horses and four wheelers until our rear ends were chapped. But I don’t mind stretching my hemorrhoids with a work out riding one of God’s greatest creatures, the horse, slowly winding up through beautiful canyons of fragrant sage grass, wild flowers, alfalfa and blue skies. We gathered eggs from the hen house, roasted a pig, shot prairie dogs (who actually harm the land and cattle) and hiked along the creek that runs through 5000 acres of seemingly untouched land. All this land is taken care of and treated like a well tended garden by …you guessed it, the environmental haters, global warmers, and polluters known as humans.

Actually, if I were king for a day, I’d have live FOX news coverage (ok CNN too) interview my wife’s cousin Doug. Doug along with his wife owns and runs a log mill in Hulett Wyoming called BearLodge. He could explain to all the dopes out there and loony tree huggers about the real environmentalists and how they work to save trees and forests in a responsible way. They are people like Doug Mills who treats the forest with respect and prunes them so they are more productive and less likely to be overcrowded and flare up in flames by lightning strikes. Not because some government agency is telling them to do so, but because they understand the importance of preserving and tending God’s creation. Proper, responsible, logging produces more trees, healthier trees that are more productive as well as increases available grazing land for their sheep and cattle. People like Doug who started his own wood “pellet” manufacturing facility on site where tons of saw dust are recycled and packaged that could be sent around the world to help heat homes in the winter. Nothing is wasted. And what’s more, it didn’t require government mandates to make it happen. It was good common sense and a spirit of entrepreneurship and capitalism that drives the men and women like Doug and Dena. It’s a family affair too. Their 2 boys and a girl (below ages 12) have been fully trained to run the mill if they needed to. They load carts, run the machines, sweep up, and bag pellets (I hope OSHA doesn’t find out) and also milk the cows. The government so-called environmentalists who have little experience in actually saving and growing trees are clueless when it comes to responsible forestry. All they know is what some pin headed professor in our liberal schools tell them or what they read from a book. My suggestion is for them to ask people like Doug, his parents, and Dena’s parents who have been doing this for many many years and who know how to grow everything from garden vegetables to Pondersa Pines.

But all this is symptomatic of what is going on in Washington today. From the President on down to the cabinet appointments, not a single person there has ever held a real job. They are all policy wonks and life long politicians educated at liberal northeast universities and have held government jobs their entire career. They need to meet and hear people like the Mill’s family explain a few things about life.

More about our trip to the Rodeo later.

Develop a strategy to win. A strategy is what you would rely on to win. It must be unique and compelling. Perform your personal situation analysis. Consider your gifts. Most clients I talk with never think about their gifts. Their focus is usually on negative self talk which reflects what they can’t do, aren’t doing, or their victimization. Consider what new opportunities your situation could bring. Think about starting over and doing something you are most passionate about. Identify clear, specific, actionable, realistic objectives. Be clear what exactly a “win” would look like. What does your competition look like? Develop a separate strategy for each form of competitive obstacle. Does your passion align with the current job you’re working? If not you have to determine if it’s the best choice to continue or to look elsewhere. More on this later.
